Microsoft may be wavering in its decision to stop selling the Windows XP software in an attempt to persuade more people to buy its newer younger brother Vista.

But Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was adamant that most people who buy PCs today buy them with XP's successor, Vista.

"If customer feedback varies, we can always wake up smarter," he told reporters.

Fans of XP - the 6-year-old operating system set to be pulled off store shelves by June 30 - have plastered the Internet with blog posts, cartoons and petitions recently. They trumpet its superiority to Vista, whose consumer launch in January was greeted with lukewarm reviews.

Unlike the usual format, in which each "Idol" performance is judged immediately, Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell were made to take notes, then offer individual critiques in rapid succession at the end of each round. The reason, Seacrest explained, was because "this show is so tight."

If one could pick one's opponent in a legislative battle, one might pick Douglas Bruce, whose popularity at the statehouse is somewhere south of stratospheric.

Boos and hisses emanated from the audience for a congressional field hearing when Tancredo dismissed residents' concerns that the effort to build 670 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border by year's end would damage the environment and destroy a centuries-old bond between residents on both sides of the Rio Grande.

Late in the five-hour hearing, Tancredo returned to a comment made earlier by panelist Betty Perez, a rancher and local activist. Perez said, "It really isn't a border to most of us who live down here."

Tancredo dismissed Perez's remarks as a "multiculturalist attitude toward borders."
